IN MEMORIAM: BEN HOLIDAY DORCY III, MAY 19, 1925 – SEPT. 16, 2017

A tribute from one roadie — and friend — to another

By Kyle Wieters

Ben Dorcy was my friend. He had so many friends that he called most everyone by the name “Lovey.” I think probably because it was easier than remembering all of those names. But in return, everyone else called him Lovey. I wasn’t there when the nickname began so I can only speculate. I doubt I was even born when Ben Dorcy became “Lovey.”

Do you ever wonder about the people behind famous people? Those who make things happen through hard work, friendship, and longevity are mainstays in all scenes, and the music world had Ben Dorcy. Considered to be the first ‘roadie,’ this man had amazing stories and more than a few celebrated associates including Loretta Lynn, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Hank Thompson. Ben passed away on September 16, 2017, at the age of 92 with more than a few miles under his belt.

“I’ve learned I have the perfect person to steer me. When I’m contemplating one of life’s difficult decisions, I generally consult with Ben Dorcy. Bless his barely thumping heart, Ben is my canary in the coalmine. When faced with a difficult decision, I observe Ben and do the opposite of what he does.”
